Mike Handell – Kids of Summer Executive Director

Mike grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan playing in all the local sports leagues and started Kids of Summer in 2002 following a successful High School career at the Bronx High School of Science.  He was selected to the All-Bronx team and prestigious Daily News All-Senior City All-Star game as the starting first basemen for the Bronx/Manhattan team following his Senior year.  He went on to captain the Syracuse University Baseball Club eventually coaching and managing the team.  After college in addition to running Kids of Summer he was the head Middle School baseball coach at the United Nations International School leading them the four championship appearances in a row and back to back ISAL titles.  In 2014 he started the New York Bluebirds Youth Baseball organization for talented and competitive young ballplayers and the second outpost of Kids of Summer in Long Island.

Most importantly, Mike knows how to coach young athletes.  He understands the ups and downs of sports, how to make sports fun, what young players need to learn and how to support them on and off the field.  He loves getting to know the Kids of Summer families and watching campers grow and mature through the years.  Mike is a huge fan of all sports and is especially loyal to the Mets, Rangers, Knicks, Giants and his Syracuse Orange.

Brian Handell – Program Director

Brian Handell was born to play and coach sports.  Raised on the Upper West Side, he had a successful athletic career at Beacon High School where he won a PSAL baseball championship and was the leading scorer in all of the PSAL as captain of the soccer team.  He went on to attend the University of Delaware as a member of their division I soccer team.

Brian has been developing his passion for coaching at Kids of Summer over the past 10 years and is now the assistant director and in charge of programming for the summer camp making it a true family business with his brother Mike.  Brian also works with our oldest campers, ages 12-14 to push and encourage them in their development as athletes.  During the “off-season” Brian is the Athletic Director at The Computer School, a public middle school on the Upper West Side where he head coaches boys baseball, boys and girls basketball and boys soccer as well as the head coach for the 12U NY Bluebirds travel baseball team.   Brian’s love for his Yankees as well as the Rangers, Knicks, Giants and World Cup Soccer is only surpassed by his passion, energy, enthusiasm and knowledge when it comes to coaching children.


Juan Hernandez – Baseball AAA Division Head Coach

Juan is in charge of our oldest, most experienced campers.  He is also the Director of Player Development for our travel organization the NY Bluebirds.  Following a successful career at DeWitt Clinton High School, Juan went onto play college ball at the University of Albany and in Oklahoma and then professionally in Mexico and with the Cleveland Indians organization.  Juan understands how to train and develop players at all ages and is a gifted instructor and student of the game.  He has a knack for understanding a players weaknesses.  Campers who spend just a short time with Juan consistently show immediate improvement.

Victor Liriano – Senior Coach

Victor started his baseball career by starring at Monroe High School in the Bronx, winning three city championships in four years.  He went on to get noticed by professional teams and was signed by the Chicago Cubs advancing all the way to the AA level.  Victor is also our 11U head coach with the NY Bluebirds.  His calm, caring demeanor for his campers, and relaxed and fun temperment has made Victor a camper favorite in addition to his extensive knowledge about coaching, especially the hitting part of the game.

Maycoll Anez – Head Pitching Coach

Maycoll Anez had an illustrious pro career as a pitcher at the AA level with the Chicago White Sox.  He is an expert pitching instructor and also serves as the head coach of our 9U NY Bluebirds and the head pitching coach in the Bluebirds organization. Maycoll’s fun energy and ability to coach both our youngest campers and most advanced players has earned him the love and respect of the children he works with.

Nick Lacativa – Senior Coach

Nick has been with Kids of Summer for 8 years and has grown into a respected and excellent head coach.  Nick played college ball at City College in New York and started at Kids of Summer following graduation.  He relates well to kids of all ages, is a fun, patient teacher and is one of our year round instructors, supervising some of our off-season programs.  Nick is also the head coach of our 10U NY Bluebirds team.

Charlie Lynn – Senior Coach

Charlie is a former camper who was hand picked five years ago not only for his baseball ability, but his maturity and leadership.  Since starting as a “CIT” at just 14 years old, Charlie has taken on the role of Senior Coach and grown into one of the most beloved coaches among our campers.  Following graduation from Columbia Prepatory High School, Charlie is now a Junior pitcher for Hamilton College.  He is in charge of helping to run our baseball program for some of our younger campers ages 6-10.  Campers look forward each week to “Coach Chuck” and his legendary 14 event Color Wars on Thursdays.

Dylan Gaherty – Senior Coach

Another former camper, Dylan has grown into quite the ballplayer as a pitcher for MacAlester College in Minnesota.  He is one of our head pitching instructors and gets the most out of his campers day in and day out at camp.

Sam Grumet – Senior Coach

Following a successful career at Beacon High School, Sam came on to coach at Kids of Summer after joining as a camper at 10 years old. Sam now is a Senior at Bard College where he plays on the newly formed team.  His brother Nikolai, also a former camper and now KOS coach plays there with him.
